Saint Longinus is commemorated in October 16 in the Orthodox Church and on March 15 in the Roman Catholic Church. (Some of the above information was gathered from the website of the Orthodox Church in America, or OCA, under the lives of the saints section.) There are at least three lessons to take away from the story of Saint Longinus. Description This reproduction of "The Confession of St. Longinus" shows the moment right after the Roman soldier pierced Our Lord with his spear. Blood and water came out from Jesus' side, then looking upon him he said, "Indeed this man was the son of God" (Mark 15:39), and converted to the faith. Arrested for profaning the gods, Longinus was brutally tortured and beheaded. Over the centuries, his lance, known as the Spear of Destiny, has been sought after by many conquerors as a weapon of great power.

In the city of Lanciano, Italy, around 700, a Basilian monk was assigned to celebrate Mass in the small church of St. Longinus. Celebrating in the Latin Rite and using unleavened bread, the monk had doubts about the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.

Consider when St. Longinus converted, he Left the army, took instruction from the apostles and became a monk in Cappadocia. There he was arrested for his faith, his teeth forced out and tongue cut off.
