The Arcam irDAC-II is a solid product and well suited to be at the centre of your digital audio experience. Beautifully crafted, loaded with features and producing a warm, neutral sound at an affordable price and it also looks sweet on the desktop. Arcam's irDAC-II was released a year ago to celebrate the British company's 40th anniversary. It's an updated version of the irDAC (2013), and adds Bluetooth connectivity, a headphone amplifier stage taken from Arcam's flagship A49 amplifier, support for DSD128 files, and a high-performance ESS ES9016K2M DAC chip, but eliminates the USB Type A There is no wireless access but a separate version, the airDAC, is available with Bluetooth connectivity. The DAC is powered by a wall wart transformer or a specialised power connection from Arcam’s A19 integrated amplifier.

Sadly, the Arcam does not recognize the iPod Classic, a mainstay of many audiophiles, so perhaps the company will address this in a future firmware update.
The subject of today’s review, the irDAC-II is a follow-on product from their hugely successful irDAC with a multitude of upgrades and a huge leap in performance over its predecessor. The Arcam might not be the most exciting looking device going but everything feels solid and well thought out. The small size and low profile of the irDAC should mean that it is easy to install in tight spaces and won’t need its own shelf if you don’t have one. The irDAC is simple but well finished. I called to my fav. HiFi store yesterday to outline the problem and walked out with an Arcam irDAC.

British outfit Arcam has been making outboard DACs since 1989, and the subject of this review, the airDAC, is one of their latest offerings in the category.
